The early rounds of a tennis Slam can often be a challenge in finding where the value is, but here’s a four-way accumulator which yields just over 23/1.
Andreas Seppi v Xavier Malisse – Seppi to win @ 1/2
Andreas Seppi and Xavier Malisse’s only previous encounter was back in 2006, and the Belgian won with ease 6-0 6-1.
Since then however, Malisse’s powers have waned and he is now ranked outside the top 100.
Seppi on the other hand is now the world number 23, and reached the fourth round in both the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and should see off Malisse at 1/2.
Murray v Llodra – Murray to win 3-0 @ 2/7
Reigning US Open and Wimbledon champion Andy Murray opens his campaign against Frenchman Michael Llodra, and the SW19 winner shouldn’t face too many problems.
Each of the pair’s three meetings have come on a hard surface and the Scot has prevailed on each occasion, including a four-set win at Flushing Meadows in 2008.
Murray also won in straights in last year’s Australian Open clash and there’s little option here but a 3-0 Murray win at 2/7.
Denis Istomin v Nicolas Almagro – Almagro to win 3-1 @ 5/2
Both Denis Istomin and Nicolas Almagro have lost their last three matches, and though Istomin leads the head-to-head record 2-0, both those meetings were back in 2010.
Almagro has had a good year, reaching the quarters at the Australian Open and the fourth round in the French, and though Istomin nicked a set off Novak Djokovic earlier this month in Montreal, Spain’s Almagro should prevail 3-1 at 5/2.
Jurgen Melzer v Evgeny Donksoy – Melzer to win 3-1 @ 5/2
Melzer arrives in the US Open hot off the back of success at the Winston-Salem Open, beating Benoit Paire and Sam Querrey en route – players ranked much higher than first-round opponent Evgeny Donksoy.
Donksoy has won five of his last ten matches, but none ranked higher than his 105 placing, and he’ll struggle against the Austrian in the extended format of the game.
The Russian has picked up at least a set in seven of his last eight however, and so Melzer to win 3-1 @ 5/2 is our pick here.
