Moviesta can build on Goodwood glory and take Nunthorpe score

Published:

Moviesta’s dramatic King George Stakes victory at the Glorious Goodwood meeting has seen the talented sprinter’s price slashed for a Nunthorpe Stakes score at York.

Ladbrokes had initially cut the victorious charge to 12/1 following the result of the 5f Group 2 contest.

Despite money pouring in for the charge owned by Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp, the firm remain a standout 9/1 about his chances on the Knavesmire.

And he could go on to repeat the feat achieved by last year’s Goodwood winner Ortensia. The eight-year-old mare completed an impressive double when going on to land the Nunthorpe, beating Spirit Quartz twice in the process.

The latter is a 25/1 outsider for glory following a poor season so far, including a King George ride where he was hampered by Moviesta.

Jockey Paul Mulrennan survived a steward’s enquiry to keep the race though and it’s his mount who is the strong fancy for success in York.

Should the Bryan Smart-trained chance triumph in one of the Ebor festival’s signature races he’ll become the third three-year-old in the past four years to do so following victories for Sole Power (2010) and Margot Did (2011).

An astonishing 100/1 winner of the renewal held three years ago, Sole Power has certainly progressed since then.

Victories this year in the Palace House Stakes, and more pertinently the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, have installed the conqueror of Shea Shea as the joint 4/1 favourite alongside his beaten rival.

If recent trends hold then that price for Edward Lynam’s six-year-old is worth snapping up as soon as possible.

Sole Power has recovered from defeat to emerge victorious twice in his past four outings.

If regular jockey Johnny Murtagh can find racing room on this occasion then there’s every chance his ride can bounce back from July Cup disappointment behind the re-opposing Shea Shea, among others.

But for now at least the focus remains on Goodwood hero Moviesta. Having already won a hot handicap over course and distance in 2013, the speedster of the moment is easily backable for more success.
