Mo Farah odds-on for SPOTY second place after double triumph
Published:Olympic and World champion Mo Farah is now the 4/5 favourite to clinch second place at the Sports Personality of the Year awards.
Following Ladbrokes’ early payout on Wimbledon champ Andy Murray, Farah looks destined for the runner-up spot after winning both the 5,000m and 10,000m golds at the World Championships in Moscow.
Farah is only the second man in history to complete an Olympic and World double-double, after Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele.
The book is already closed on the SPOTY winner this year, after Murray secured his second major title of his career at Wimbledon in July.
However, with Farah writing himself into the track and field record books, he is odds-on to come second at the BBC awards show.
Should Farah end up winning the award outright, bets placed on him prior to the Andy Murray payout will also be settled as winners.
The 30-year-old is also available at 4/1 to win next year’s London Marathon, despite claiming his career is ‘on hold’ after his double success in Russia.
However, if he does not enter then betting stakes will be returned.
Further Olympic glory cannot be ruled out for the Somalia-born athlete either, with odds of 2/1 on offer for Farah to retain his 5,000m and 10,000m gold medals at the Rio de Janeiro games in 2016.
Another double gold triumph in Brazil can be backed at 5/1, which would swell his trophy cabinet which already contains 11 gold titles across Olympic, World and European platforms.
“I never thought in my career I would achieve something like this,” said Farah after his latest successes.
“This was very tough – it was all left to the last two laps. I had a lot of pressure but at the same time I enjoy it.
“I am very proud to represent my country and hold the Union Jack. To all the people who give me great support I can’t thank you enough. Thank you to all the people back home – I am very proud.”
