Mighty Mickelson can claim PGA Championship win
Published:Phil Mickelson is 12/1 to win the PGA Championship after enjoying one of the finest and most consistent seasons of his career.
With Tiger Woods 3/1 favourite for the final Major of the year, many will feel Mickelson’s price represents better value, especially given his form and Wood’s ongoing Major drought.
Mickelson won the Open for the first time in July, just a month after a runner-up place at the US Open behind Justin Rose.
Lefty has been a regular near the top of the leaderboard this season, with a win at the Phoenix Open in January an early indication of what was to come.
Third place finishes at the WGC Cadillac and Wells Fargo have given the American six top five finishes this year.
To further enhance Mickelson’s chances, he’s won the PGA Championship before – at Baltusrol in 2005 – and has shown his class previously at this year’s venue at Oak Hill.
The 43-year-old may have only placed 23rd when New York’s Oak Hill course last hosted this tournament in 2003, but he got off to a scintillating start 10 years ago, soaring to the top of the leaderboard with an opening round 66.
Subsequent rounds of 75,72 and another 75 ended his challenge but his first day score at Rochester proved to be the joint lowest of the tournament.
Rose is another man who will be in the hunt for the final Major of the season.
The Englishman is 20/1 to win a second Major of the year having finally got the monkey off his back with that memorable victory at Augusta.
Rose has produced similarly consistent results this year to Mickelson, with the 33-year-old claiming five top 10 finishes in 2013, and tied for third in the PGA Championship last year.
