Man Utd turn to Premier League starlet after failing in Baines bid
Published:While most Manchester United fans would suggest that David Moyes needs a new central midfielder far more than a new left-back, the Scot is apparently determined to find a replacement for Patrice Evra this summer.
After Everton rejected their £28m approach for both Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines, Manchester United are considering Southampton’s Luke Shaw, who is rated at around £10m.
The 18-year-old starred in the Saints 1-0 win at West Brom, rampaging forward down his flank to win the late penalty that was converted by Rickie Lambert.
It was a fine performance, but Evra’s display against Swansea City was arguably even better, and given the Frenchman’s fine form over the past 12 months it is bizarre that United are so keen to sign a new left-back.
Shaw would make more sense than Baines in this regard, as at 18, he is considerably younger than Evra and so could be viewed as a long-term replacement.
Baines, in contrast, is just four years younger than Evra, and spending £12-15m on the 28-year-old is an injudicious use of funds that could be invested in a new midfielder.
Shaw signed a new five-year deal at Southampton in July, and the Saints are keen to keep the youngster.
In the past they have been forced to sell off their prized assets, with Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gareth Bale going on to become established Premier League stars elsewhere.
With Southampton now a fixture in the top flight themselves, they will hope that Shaw will not have his head turned so early in his career.
