Man Utd Trophies 2014: A domestic cup is the best hope
Published:Manchester United may have won the Community Shield, though any hopes of a Red Devils double or treble this season are wildly optimistic, while David Moyes securing any trophy at all remains doubtful.
The glorious reign of Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford will forever be marked by a glut of trophies, but in particular the heroics of his class of ’99, who secured United an unprecedented treble consisting of Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.
Nevertheless, even the great Sir Alex endured a tough start to his tenure where an FA Cup win in his third season in charge virtually saved his job and this is why Moyes and United should be happy to land just one piece of silverware this season, even if that is the Capital One Cup at odds of 7/1.
Given the way things are shaping up, 4/5 on United enduring a trophy-less campaign may just be the only bet to take when considering the Manchester United Specials 2013/14 market as a single domestic trophy looks to be their best hope.
Aside from that treble, Fergie’s 26-year dynasty only yielded five other double-wining campaigns, three of which arrived in the mid to late 90’s which were all League and FA Cup combinations.
Meanwhile, the other two which arrived this side of the millennium were both significantly Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired successes; firstly the League and Champions League double of 2007/08 and latterly the Premier League and League Cup in 2008/09 – the Portuguese’s final season in a red shirt.
With Man City’s forceful recruitment drive and Jose Mourinho’s return to lead Chelsea it looks increasingly like Moyes will be up against it to retain the title, especially given the troubles he’s encountered in bringing in new faces.
Then there’s the Champions League where Moyes has zero experience of the tournament proper, meaning his chances of landing that trophy are slimmer than all of the others.
