Lethal Force to wrestle Sprint Cup crown from Society Rock

Published:

Lethal Force has already reversed the form that saw him narrowly finish behind Society Rock in the Duke of York Stakes.

And the dual Group 1 winner can now go on to score a hat-trick of successes over his rival and triumph in the upcoming renewal of Haydock’s Sprint Cup.

Ladbrokes have rightly made Clive Cox’s Diamond Jubilee Stakes and Darley July Cup winner their 3/1 favourite for the 6f contest.

Given that the sprint specialist has been dominant over the distance recently it’s difficult to play down his chances.

Many of those who’ve been kept behind during those victories are likely to renew their opposition.

And the four-year-old front runner is primed to repeat the dose with only a deluge of rain likely to scare off followers.

If recent form isn’t enough to persuade onlookers of Lethal Force’s credentials then race trends should act as the final piece in the jigsaw for those in need of more proof.

Nine of the previous 11 winners have been rated 111 or higher, five-years-old or younger, had won over 6f before and didn’t win their last race.

The above are all boxes ticked by Lethal Force, just more priceless ammo that amounts to the son of Dark Angel being such a fantastic proposition.

But it would be foolish to completely dismiss the rest of the potential field.

Declaration of War’s entry remains a discussion point leaving others such as Garswood and Reckless Abandon as some of the more noteworthy each-way picks.

The former has won over trips of a furlong longer and a furlong less with the Sprint Cup journey perhaps offering a happy medium for the 16/1 chance.

Meanwhile, Reckless Abandon has proved himself in top company over the distance and his two defeats over sharper trips this season can perhaps be forgiven.

At 6/1 it’s still well worth siding with an emerging colt who was so impressive when landing the Darley Prix Morny last year over Deauville’s straight track.
