History on Bayern Munich’s side in clash with Chelsea
Considering the Champions League winner is generally held to be the best side in Europe in a season, it is surprising that they have only won the subsequent season’s Super Cup half the time.
Over the past ten years, the winner has alternated perfectly between the Champions League and Europa League victor and this year Bayern Munich are set to benefit from the trend.
Chelsea themselves lost last season to maintain the pattern, thrashed 4-1 by a Radamel Falcao-inspired Atletico Madrid.
They qualified by beating Bayern in the Champions League final and this match is the first time the two sides have played since then.
It is also the first clash between Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola since the latter left Barcelona and although there will not be the hostility of an El Clasico clash in the fixture, both men will be keen to win.
Guardiola has already won the Super Cup twice with Barcelona, while Mourinho lost in the final with Porto after winning the Europa League.
Guardiola’s Bayern side dropped their first points of the season in a 1-1 draw with Freiburg after the Spaniard opted to rest several key players for the clash with Chelsea.
Mario Mandzukic, Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and Philipp Lahm all started on the bench and should return for the Super Cup.
Both players have scored twice in Bayern’s four Bundesliga matches so far this season.
Chelsea also lost their perfect start to the season in their final match before the Super Cup, drawing 0-0 in a tepid affair at Manchester United.
Mourinho opted to play without a striker at Old Trafford, in a manner reminiscent of Guardiola’s Barcelona side.
One of Demba Ba, Romelu Lukaku and Fernando Torres will surely start in Prague, with each priced at 9/1 to score the first goal.
A more reliable bet might be backing Frank Lampard to score at any time at 10/3. The midfielder has scored three times in three matches against Bayern.
