Hamilton in pole position to keep up the pressure on Vettel

Published:

Lewis Hamilton won the Belgian Grand Prix in 2010 and the Mercedes driver has given himself the perfect opportunity of capturing the race again after taking a scintillating pole position at Spa.

The British driver will be delighted to continue the momentum gained from his first win of the season in Hungary last time out and despite being flanked by the two Red Bulls on the starting grid Hamilton will be confident of becoming the first man of the campaign to notch successive wins.

A priority start in Belgium  has not been enough to push the 2008 World Champion into favouritism, however, and the 9/4 available about the Stevenage-born pilot will attract plenty of interest.

Sebastian Vettel, who triumphed here two years ago, predictably spearheads the market after finishing best of the rest in qualifying, but odds of 13/8 might be short enough to deter, despite the all-conquering German winning four of the season’s ten races.

Mark Webber, next in the betting at 8/1 has the third best seat in the house whilst Hamilton’s team-mate Nico Rosberg will start fourth and Britain’s Paul Di Resta fifth on the grid, given quotes of  10/1 and 50/1 respectively.

The Ferrari duo of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa will have it all to do from ninth and tenth in another disappointing Saturday for the Italian team.

It appears that the Prancing Horse were guilty again of poor decision-making as when the rain stopped they failed to ensure that Alonso was able to finish another lap when the track had dried. Once again this could be costly for the under-pressure constructors.

Jenson Button’s frustrations continued as the McLaren driver could only manage sixth and his chances of repeating his win here last year are deemed to be slim, currently 25/1.

Once again customers are forced to having to decide whether Vettel can win, but any who doubt the three-time world champion would surely have to select a red-hot Hamilton to continue his effort to stop the title becoming another after-thought for all but one.
