Dan Roebuck’s Wyndham C’ship preview: Zach’s your man

Published:

Zach Johnson is the clear form pick this week as the PGA Tour heads to Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina for the Wyndham Championship.

The former Masters champion’s recent performances just cannot be bettered by anyone else in the field scheduled to tee up at the 7,130-yard, par-70 track that features small, undulating greens – making Johnson’s price of 16/1 shine brightest.

The layout requires accuracy from tee to green and a deft touch on the putting surfaces – all of which play right into Johnson’s hands.

He comes into this event on the back of four straight top-10 finishes, and just failed to reward each-way backers at last week’s USPGA Championship in New York where he claimed eighth place.

Johnson ranked top for greens in regulation in the WGC Bridgestone Invitational a fortnight back and, although he has been a rare visitor to Sedgefield Country Club over the years, the fact that he finished with a sparkling 64 on his last appearance five years ago bodes well.

Johnson vies for favouritism with Brandt Snedeker 14/1, Webb Simpson also at 14/1 and defending champion Sergio Garcia at the same odds again, but the dangers to the headline selection might come from a little further down the outright betting list.

Roberto Castro has been nibbled at already in the market this week rated at 50/1 currently and that’s not without reason.

His summer performances have been in the ‘winner-waiting-to-happen’ category, with second in the AT&T National, sixth in the Canadian Open and 12th in the USPGA Championship last week the standout displays. Accuracy is his stock in trade and his putting has improved no end this term.

Lastly, Patrick Reed – just behind Castro at 66/1 – could be worth backing to drop his maiden tag on tour. He started 66-68 at Sedgefield 12 months ago, and will be full of confidence following two top-10s in his last two starts.

My three off the tee therefore are Johnson, Castro and Reed.
