Bayern Munich v Chelsea: Pep and Mourinho face-off again

Published:

No manager has ever won the Super Cup three times, but Pep Guardiola will lead Bayern Munich into the final against Chelsea with every chance of doing just that.

Bayern are 2/5 favourites to follow up their treble last season with another trophy, with Chelsea 7/4 to get the better of the German side.

Over the past 10 seasons the Super Cup champion has rotated between the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League, and after Chelsea’s 4-1 loss to Atletico Madrid last year, Bayern are set to benefit if the trend holds.

If so Guardiola will eclipse Arrigo Sacchi, Louis van Gaal, Carlo Ancelotti and Sir Alex Ferguson in becoming the first manager to win the trophy three times, after two victories during his spell at Barcelona.

That is just one of several intriguing sub-plots to the game, which sees Guardiola reunited with sparring partner Jose Mourinho and Bayern and Chelsea face-off for the first time since the Premier League side won the Champions League final in 2012.

That was one of 10 UEFA finals that English sides have won against German teams in 12 attempts, and that is not the only historical trend Guardiola will have to buck to win the match.

Bayern have appeared in three Super Cup finals and lost all three, with their most recent loss coming against Liverpool in 2001.

Both Chelsea and Bayern come into the game on the back of dropping their first league points of the season.

Chelsea, fielding a Guardiola-esque striker-less formation, drew 0-0 at Manchester United, while Bayern rested several key players in a 1-1 draw with Freiburg.

Mourinho will surely re-instate one of Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Romelu Lukaku to his side for the Super Cup, and each player is 9/1 to open the scoring.

However backing Frank Lampard to score any time at 10/3 might be the better option, as the midfielder has scored three times in three games against Bayern.
