Back Assombalonga to outscore much-talked about Griffiths

Published:

Wolves star Leigh Griffiths has been installed as the favourite to top the League One goalscoring charts after a fruitful two seasons away at Hibernian on loan.

The 23-year-old notched no fewer than 39 goals in his 78 appearances for the Edinburgh club, leading his parent club to resist many a bid from teams both north and south of the border this summer.

The forward has already found the target twice in the league for the Midlands side but his tendency to play in a deeper-lying role operating behind an out-and-out striker makes the 9/2 about him being the division’s lead marksman too short.

Peterborough new boy Britt Assombalonga has made a strong start to the 2013/14 campaign, hitting three in his first trio of games for Posh.

The 20-year-old, who is an 8/1 shot to be the premier goal-getter, was signed from Watford in the summer for a record fee and handed a four-year-deal along with the number nine shirt at London Road.

Eyebrows were raised after such a high fee was paid for a youngster whose only full season has been spent on loan in League Two at Southend United.

However, the Zaire-born hitman racked up an impressive 16 goals in his debut Football League campaign, persuading one of League One’s much-fancied teams to part with a hefty sum for his services.

Darren Ferguson has an impressive record of developing strikers, with the likes of Dwight Gayle, Craig Mackail-Smith and Aaron McClean all developing into prolific front men under his tutelage.

The supply line supporting Asssombalonga should also be taken into consideration when pondering a selection here.

The young forward is backed up by the likes of Grant McCann, Lee Tomlin and Tommy Rowe, all of whom act as creative forces in an attack-minded Peterborough outfit.
