Wayne Rooney future increasingly likely to be at Man Utd

The 4/7 on offer with Ladbrokes about Wayne Rooney still being a Manchester United player at the end of the current transfer window could be worth getting your teeth into after the Daily Express reported that the striker is set to stay at Old Trafford.

Speculation over Rooney’s future has been rife since Alex Ferguson eluded to him making a second transfer request in as many years in the week before his departure from the United hotseat.

It would be quicker to count the top European clubs that the England striker has not been linked with during the summer transfer “silly season” with PSG, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Chelsea and Arsenal all linked with him at times.

The arrival of David Moyes too seemed to be edging the year-old towards the exit, with the ex-Everton gaffer having previously sued Rooney over statements in the latter’s autobiography.

Rooney was furthermore thought to be worried about the Old Trafford fans’ reaction to his supposed second transfer request, which he has always insisted was never made.

According to the Express Moyes and Ed Woodward – the club’s new chief executive – held talks with the striker in order to clear the air and have accepted that he never asked Ferguson for a transfer in a meeting between the pair back in April. Moyes is expected to confirm that Rooney will stay at his first press conference.

His club have always maintained the striker is not for sale and it may have been Rooney’s fear of a fan backlash which had been driving speculation linking him with a move elsewhere.

An acknowledgement that the second transfer request was never made would do much to remedy the Liverpudlian’s standing with Red Devils’ fans.

Rooney is still a player of immense value to his club, having chipped in with 22 goals and 15 assists in just 37 starts last term and at the age of just 27 is United’s all-time leading Premier League Scorer.
