Top seeds record suggests Ferrer will make Wimbledon semis
Published:The big names in men’s tennis have regularly contested the latter stages of Grand Slams in the last 18 months and this intimates that David Ferrer will beat Juan Martin del Potro in what is being priced as the closest of quarter finals at Wimbledon.
In the last six Grand Slams dating back to the 2012 Australian Open, at least three of the top four seeds in the men’s draw have contested the semi finals.
Meanwhile, this record also extends to eight of the last nine Grand Slams, with the one anomaly coming at the Australian Open in 2011.
With Roger Federer out of Wimbledon – ending his streak of 36 consecutive Grand Slam quarter finals – it is left to Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Ferrer to preserve the record of the highest seeds.
World number one Djokovic is 1/8 to beat Tomas Berdych in the quarter finals, over whom he holds a winning record of 13-2, while Murray is 1/12 to extend his winning record over Fernando Verdasco to 9-2.
Ferrer has also won four on the bounce against Del Potro to lead 6-2 overall, but is only the marginal favourite at 10/11 to progress to the semi finals.
A further boost for Ferrer is that exactly three of the top four seeds have reached the Wimbledon semi finals in the last three renewals, while Rafa Nadal’s withdrawal in 2009 theoretically meant that no number one seed took part at SW19.
The treble of Djokovic, Murray and Ferrer all winning their respective quarter finals is priced at a little over 1/1.
