Rangers have to be backed to win Scottish Div 2, even at 1/12

Published:

Livingston were the last example of a side to be sent packing down the Scottish football pyramid to the fourth rung of the ladder, where they immediately responded with two emphatic promotions before setting up camp in Division One.

Rangers are the latest side to freefall in this way and have already passed their first exam back to the big time by romping to the Division Three title in the last campaign by 24 points.

Livingston could only win this division by 15 points, but were far more deadly in Division Two when putting a 23-point cushion between themselves and second-placed Ayr.

It is by no means guaranteed that Rangers will top the table with a margin of this size, but it will take a brave person to back against them.

In terms of bankers for the season, punters will do well to find something more certain than Rangers winning Scotland’s Division Two and there may actually some grounds to believe that 1/12 is a value bet on this outcome.

Queen of the South ran away with the division last year when 25 points clear of their nearest rival and Rangers only lost to them on penalties in the quarter finals of the Scottish Challenge Cup.

And it is fair to say that their squad has potentially improved between seasons, with three of the last campaign’s Scottish Premier League regulars all arriving on free transfers.

Cammy Bell is a goalkeeper that has long been on the Rangers radar, Nicky Law had an impact in the Motherwell midfield and Jon Daly was good for goals at Dundee United.

Daly scored 15 in all competitions for Dundee United to add to 22 in the season previous. There is every chance he will contribute a hatful at a level two classes lower.
