Jovetic’s versatility to give Man City another dimension

Although Stevan Jovetic was employed at times as a lone striker at Fiorentina, starting as a false number nine does not look his best position.

The problem is that it is hard to know what his most natural position is, as he can be equally as effective as a support striker or from a wide attacking role if given the licence to drift into space.

This versatility is one of the main perks that Manchester City will benefit from if signing the Montenegrin, with only a medical now seemingly standing in the way of a deal being completed.

This will give Manuel Pellegrini the fluidity to change formation easily too and it is how Jovetic links with Yaya Toure and Fernandinho that is most eagerly awaited.

Jovetic is a bit of a wanderer in the sense that he is always searching for space, which in turn creates other space for others to exploit.

Although not as liable as fellow Spaniard Santi Cazorla to drop off rather than run beyond the ball, this is not really David Silva’s ideal game. He is more likely to be supplying the killer pass to the midfield runner.

This is where Fernandinho and Yaya Toure come in, who are both at their best when given a box-to-box midfield role, but could play together in an interesting central midfield pairing in the same mould of the German national team, when Bastien Schweinsteiger and Sami Khedera start together.

The other option is to play Toure at the tip of the midfield trio, but Pellegrini tends to have a playmaker as his number 10, like he has done with Juan Roman Riquelme, Cazorla and Isco, so this is unlikely.

Pellegrini certainly has some attacking depth and options at Man City, which is vital for a title tilt, and the acquisition of Jovetic must be deemed a positive to their chances of regaining their Premier League crown, which is priced at 11/5.
