Gomez signing makes Fiorentina overpriced for Serie A title tilt

Published:

Only three players in Serie A created more clear cut chances than Stevan Jovetic last season and there is real reason to believe that the capture of Mario Gomez makes Fiorentina appealing outsiders at 18/1 to be crowned Italian champions in the upcoming campaign.

Gomez has scored goals at a rate of better than one in every two fixtures wherever he has been in recent seasons, netting 75 in 115 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern Munich and previously 63 in 121 games for Stuttgart.

His record last season was also noteworthy, as despite playing second fiddle to Mario Mandzukic in the Bayern attack, he still helped himself to 12 goals in his 11 starts.

First-team opportunities are certain to be more abundant at Fiorentina where he will naturally get picked ahead of Luca Toni and his arrival will enable Jovetic to play slightly deeper to add greater creativity, assuming he doesn’t leave.

Fiorentina were among the most prolific from set plays in Serie A last season and although Gomez didn’t score too many headers himself, his liveliness around the six-yard box will surely allow him to poach a few goals.

Furthermore, Gomez had a better shot conversion rate than all of Robert Lewandowski, Edinson Cavani and Alvaro Negredo last season and only the former of this trio enjoyed a higher shot accuracy percentage.

The possession-based game of midfield trio David Pizarro, Alberto Aquilani and Borja Valero is sure to make Fiorentina tough to beat again and there is every reason to believe that they can build on finishing fourth in Serie A last season.

If Jovetic does depart, Josip Ilicic would possibly arrive from Palermo as his replacement and Vincenzo Montella is not short of attacking options in any case, with the likes of Giuseppe Rossi and Adem Ljajic already on the club’s books.
