Golden oldie Venus can trump little sister and comeback at US Open

The women’s game has long been dominated by Serena Williams with the likes of Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova chipping in from time to time.

However, this year’s Wimbledon final saw two players ranked outside the world’s top 10 contest the biggest prize in the game.

The performances of Sabine Lisicki and eventual champion Marion Bartoli are evidence that there is still life within the women’s game and it is not simply the Serena Show.

The US Open is next up on the Grand Slam circuit and the 10/11 about the defending champion Williams to retain her crown looks unbackable considering her inexplicable exit from SW19.

Instead, with the recent goings on at Wimbledon, it may be worth looking to those lower down in the betting to provide real value at the Flushing Meadows showpiece.

Keeping it in the Williams family may bring with it great rewards.

Venus has struggled with injuries for the last three years or so but her US Open pedigree cannot be ignored. The older of the two sisters has two titles here and has made the final on four occasions in total.

The 33-year-old sat out her first Wimbledon Championships since 1996 this year in a bid to rest up and not aggravate a back injury, which should have cleared up in time for the tournament.

It’s important to acknowledge as well that only injury and not desire has kept the older sibling away from the game. Venus has said several times that she wants to continue until she is forty

She made the semis in 2010 and despite under performing in the last two years – largely because injury – she could be a real threat and offers great each-way value at 100/1.

Another woman in the draw who has the potential to cause and upset is Angelique Kerber.

The German endured a poor Wimbledon but she has impressed at the US Open in recent years making the semis back in 2011 and being edged out by eventual semi-finalist Sara Errani in the fourth round here last year.

The 25-year-old is a 40/1 shot for glory and has been to the final of a hard court event on Tour already this year, as well as mounting an impressive challenge at Indian Wells, where she made the last-four.

She looks too long at the aforementioned price and should tempt each-way backers on the lookout for an outsider.
