Canyari to take Group 2 Newmarket honours on just second start

Published:

There may be no Group 1 contest on the opening day of Newmarket’s July meeting, but some hot renewals do still feature, with the appearance of Matrooh of particular interest in his second start in handicap company.

13:40 – Dare To Achieve @ 5/2

Favourite backers could get off to the optimum start as Dare To Achieve looks to build on the simplest of victories last time, when pulling heavily for the most part.

He had finished second to Remote previously from the worst of wide draws and it is this form for which Dare To Achieve is most favoured, while the jockey booking of Richard Hughes is a positive and there is no reason to believe he won’t see out the 1m5f.

The Queen’s Vase could have a say on the outcome of this with four Royal Ascot entrants re-opposing. Feel Like Dancing did the best of the quartet that day and is attempting to hand John Gosden a third straight triumph in the Bahrain Trophy.

14:10 – Canyari @ 15/2

This is full of promising sorts and it would be no surprise to see either Astaire or Brown Sugar make the necessary improvement to take this at each-way prices.

However, preference is for Canyari, whose three-runner debut victory could not have worked out much better, with both horses to have finished at least five lengths adrift of him, coming back out to win since.

An entry in the Gimcrack is another positive to the potential that Canyari is thought to have.

15:15 – Matrooh @ 4/1

This looks extremely tough to call. One Pekan is very consistent and could step up for the use of a first-time hood, while the rise to 1m2f may assist Sea Shanty after staying on notably at Royal Ascot over 1m last time.

But it is hard not to be taken by Matrooh, who gets in here off an official rating of 87, despite finishing third last time behind Remote and Baltic Knight, who have since gone on to triumph off marks exceeding 100.

For each-way backers, Greeleys Love has some appeal after dropping 1lb for a luckless run at Royal Ascot last time, where he would have arguably placed if not for getting completely shut off in running.
