Brentford the ones to challenge Wolves for League One title

Wolves may have already seen the likes of Premier League faces Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Stephen Hunt and Christophe Berra released this summer, while Karl Henry and Adam Hammill have been sold to QPR and Huddersfield respectively.

However, few could argue that they do not still retain the best squad in League One this season and in Kenny Jackett they may also have the know-how of the best manager in the division.

These two elements arguably make Wolves respectable value at 7/2 to return to the Championship next season as League One winners.

But the problem in backing Wolves is that they would not be the first and they certainly wouldn’t be the last fancied club to underachieve in this sense.

Back in 2005/06 Nottingham Forest would have been the choice of many punters to win the division, but they could only finish seventh, while in 07/08 Leeds would have been in the same boat, but ended up in the play-offs in fifth.

More recently, Sheffield United have had two years as favourites to top League One, but third and fifth-place finishes mean they are still awaiting promotion.

Their chances of winning League One this year seem slimmer than in previous years too, with rookie manager David Weir seeming to have been offered lesser ammunition than Danny Wilson before him.

Instead, the big threat to Wolves could prove to be Brentford at 9/1, as they bid to go two better than when finishing third last season.

Only four players in the division scored more goals that Clayton Donaldson last season and the fact he remains at the club for now is a plus, while one of those to out-score Donaldson, Will Grigg, has joined from Walsall to potentially form a lethal partnership in attack.

Harry Forrester has left, which is a blow, but another interesting pairing could develop down the right-side, with new full-back from Villarreal Javi Venta likely to forge an attacking unit with Czech international loanee Martin Fillo.

The hope will be that these recruits can help provide some additional away victories, as this is what arguably cost Brentford promotion last season, taking maximum points from just seven games on their travels.
