Arthur well backed for royal baby name in last 24 hours
Published:After what seems like an eternity, the royal baby boy has finally arrived into the world – sinking wagers galore for punters convinced the anointed infant would be female in the process – and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge must now settle down to the testing task of naming the future ruler.
Having been friendless in the betting yesterday morning, Arthur looks the monarchical moniker the betting public want, having been backed all the way in to 8/1 fourth favourite.
Only George (5/2), James (5/1) and Alexander (7/1) are shorter in the betting at present and with all three – along with the Louis (12/1) – long-term residents in the market’s upper echelons, the strength of the gamble on Arthur looks to have weight.
The future King, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, Ireland and the British Dominions beyond the Seas and Defender of the Faith will have decades of royal life ahead of him before the burden of ruling his subjects rests upon his shoulders, but his young parents could do worse than imbue him with the name of a mythical king who ruled over Britain in the late fifth and early sixth centuries.
After all, the legendary Tintagel-based monarch is believed to have successfully defended his kingdom from Saxon marauders.
If more modern political concerns are to influence the Duke and Duchess, then enhancing the ‘special relationship’ between the United Kingdom and the USA by naming their son Barack (200/1) is an option.
Meanwhile, the insidious influence of pop culture is sure to have crept under the doors of the royal residences, but it seems unlikely that the newborn is to be named after X Factor caterwaulers Rylan Clark or Jahmene Douglas if prices of 500/1 are anything to go by.
Nods to Kanye West’s recently arrived son North or South Korean ‘Gangnam Style’ croaker Psy were deemed even more unlikely, occupying the Pluto-like outer reaches of the betting at 5000/1.
