Stats suggest Bell will shine for England
For England to have a chance in the ICC Champions Trophy, they will require some handy performances at the crease.
And there will be no shortage of candidates willing to step up and put in a decent knock for the Andy Flowers’ men, making the top England run scorer a particularly interesting market.
Alistair Cook – 5/2
The talismanic England captain has been a consistent performer for the ODI side and has averaged 35.19 in one day competitions over the last year. Cook has not been the most prolific of scorers in this form of the game and was out for a duck in the warm-up match against New Zealand.
He is, however, consistent, scoring at least 30 in each of his last four visits to the crease, including a 78 in Napier.
Jonathan Trott – 3/1
England’s most consistent performer over the last 12 months, Trott has the highest average in the England set-up with 66 per innings. The Warwickshire man has knocked five half centuries over the last year and is fine form going into this tournament.
He has scored at least 30 in has last eight matches, a run that includes a 71 against South Africa and recently 109 not out against New Zealand. The stats often suggest that when Trott plays well, so does his team and so this may appeal as a patriotic bet.
Ian Bell – 10/3
Bell goes into the tournament in good form having scored 82 against New Zealand at Nottingham.
A reliable performer for the ODI side, Bell has flourished as an opener since Kevin Pietersen’s retirement last summer. He has scored more ODI runs than any other Englishman in the last year with 1040 – over 300 more than second place Alistair Cook. Bell has also scored more centuries and half centuries than any of his team mates.
