Recent major form indicates Scott has to be backed for US Open success
Published:Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Few would argue that these are four of the greatest players to have showcased their talents in the game of golf.
They are also the only four players since World War II to have won the opening two majors of a calendar year, meaning that Adam Scott has the opportunity to add his name to this illustrious list in 2013.
Scott is 20/1 to win the US Open at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania, which would represent a second career major following his victory at the Masters earlier this year.
The Australian has become something of a force on the big stages in recent years, failing to finish outside of the top 25 in the last seven majors, since missing the cut at the US Open in 2011.
What’s more, he potentially could quite easily have been arriving at Merion having won all of the last three majors.
At the Open Championship he bogeyed all of the last four holes to finish second, at the PGA Championship he was in a share of third after three rounds before struggling over the final 18 holes and then he got his deserved win at Augusta.
Meanwhile, looking solely at the last five majors, there are only eight players that have made the cut in every instance.
And looking at the combined results of this octet, Scott’s aggregate score is far lower than that of any of the others.
Scott has played the last five majors at 15-under, with Tiger Woods next best and some 17 shots worse off and Jason Dufner a further seven shots back.
Furthermore, it was an Australian that ruled supreme on the last occasion that Merion hosted the US Open, when David Graham was victorious back in 1981.
