Play it safe with simple 4/1 women’s Wimbledon accumulator

Published:

Although there is a strong possibility of some big upsets in the opening round of women’s action at Wimbledon, we have opted to play it safe with our accumulator and stick to five selections that combine to pay out at 4/1.

In each of the last three years, at least one of the women’s top-10 seeds has fallen at the first hurdle at Wimbledon, while five of the top 20 exited at this stage just 12 months ago.

Britain’s Johanna Konta could supply an upset this time at 11/2 as she faces Jelena Jankovic first, who has gone out in the opening round at Wimbledon in each of the last two years.

But we don’t believe that Jankovic will complete this particular unwanted hat-trick, although she is too short at 1/10 to feature in our accumulator.

Instead, two other Brits are tipped to follow Konta out of the early exit.

Anne Keothavong is readying for her 13th appearance at Wimbledon and we anticipate a ninth first-round exit when she faces Garbine Muguruza.

Muguruza’s run to the semi finals of the recent tournament on the grass of Holland should provide the confidence to triumph on her Wimbledon debut.

The other Brit likely to exit in the first round is Samantha Murray, who should have her hands full with Italy’s Camila Giorgi.

Giorgi won the only previous meeting between the pair in Wimbledon qualifying in 2011 and reached round four last year, before being beaten by losing finalist Agnieskza Radwanska.

Elsewhere, Christina McHale is fancied to progress through her all-American clash with Alexa Glatch, while Carla Suarez Navarro can progress in the battle of the Spaniards with Lourdes Dominguez Lino.

Our final pick is perhaps the most risky, although Croatian teenager Donna Vekic is positioned over 100 places higher in the WTA rankings than opponent Petra Cetkovska.

Wimbledon women’s first round selections

Camila Giorgi to beat Samantha Murray @ 1/4
Carla Suarez Navarro to beat Lourdes Dominguez Lino @ 1/4
Garbine Muguruza to beat Anne Keothavong @ 2/7
Christina Mchale to beat Alexa Glatch @ 2/7
Donna Vekic to beat Petra Cetkovska @ 4/6
