Newcastle fancied to be Poyet’s next employers after Brighton chop

After Brighton dismissed Gus Poyet during a live television broadcast, the punters are of the opinion he’ll be a target for Newcastle.

The media circus at St James’ Park has been in full flow owing to the second coming of Joe Kinnear and this has seen speculation mount regarding current chief Alan Pardew’s long-term future at the Magpies’ helm.

The 2011-12 Manager of the Year is currently 7/4 favourite to be the first Premier League boss out of a job this term and Ladbrokes have made this post the leading candidate to be Poyet’s next at 2/1.

The Uruguayan’s sterling work at Brighton earned him a reputation as one of the brightest managerial prospects operating outside of the top flight and a move to Newcastle would definitely appeal to him, given the stature of the club and the increased financial resources the Toon Army can offer.

However, whether such a volatile character – it’s reported his fall out with the Seagulls’ hierarchy was based around their unwillingness to stretch the transfer budget ahead of the coming season – would be able to form a stable relationship with director of football Kinnear is questionable.

Former Wimbledon and Toon boss Kinnear would surely also toss his hat in the ring to replace Pardew if, or seemingly when, he departs and he would provide stiff competition to Poyet on account of the faith Newcastle chairman Mike Ashley evidently has in him.

Should he not make the Tyneside switch, a job managing his country is the deemed the next best wager with Uruguay priced up at 8/1 to be the source of his next pay cheque.

A return to either of Tottenham or Chelsea – the two clubs he played for in the Premier League – is chalked up at 20/1 and 25/1 respectively, while a more adventurous/irrational bet is the 250/1 available for him to be the next MoTD host.
