Gus Poyet favourite for Wigan job as Whelan makes approach

Published:

Gus Poyet has been installed as the big 3/1 favourite to become the next Wigan Athletic boss.

The Latics allegedly made an approach for him on Saturday as they look to quickly fill the hole left by Roberto Martinez’s departure to Everton.

Poyet is currently suspended by Brighton following comments he made after their play-off semi-final defeat against Crystal Palace and there is little hope of a reconciliation between the two parties.

While the 3/1 looks a decent price for a manager who has allegedly already been approached and will surely be available, there are plenty of reasons to consider backing another man at longer odds.

With Michael Laudrup’s position at Swansea City still apparently up in the air, Poyet will surely be amongst the favourites to take over should the Dane leave the Liberty – and that may persuade Poyet to hold off negotiations with Wigan.

Elsewhere, former Bolton boss Owen Coyle is second favourite at 7/2 and looks a decent punt – although he’s been out of work since the poor end to his time at the Reebok in 2012.

David Moyes’ clearout of the Manchester United backroom staff has also provided a couple of other options for Wigan chairman Dave Whelan.

Former United coaches Mike Phelan and Rene Meulensteen are priced at 7/2 and 6/1 respectively to take on the main job at the DW Stadium.

However, Karl Robinson also looks an interesting proposition at 7/2.

The MK Dons boss is the youngest manager in the football league at 32 and would fit in with Wigan’s style of play and – perhaps just as importantly – would surely be a relatively cheap acquisition.
