Gomez future still unclear with Spurs a perfect fit

It’s no secret that Mario Gomez is being courted by a variety of top European clubs and Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has done little to quell frenzied transfer speculation, with the Mirror reporting that Tottenham could be a potential suitor.

Rummenigge has told reporters that Germany international Gomez is staying with the European champions for now but added that “we (Bayern) will see what will happen” should an official enquiry be made.

Gomez netted 19 times for Bayern Munich last season yet still found himself struggling to oust his pre-eminent namesake, Mario Mandzukic, from the Bayern starting line-up.

That total was still higher than the efforts of Spurs pair Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe who both struggled with injury problems and periods of poor form.

The North London outfit would probably have to spend big for a player of Gomez’s undoubted pedigree.

However, if he is deemed surplus to requirements at the Allianz then Bayern may accept an offer lower than his worth.

And the likes of Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and Lewis Holtby would be more than capable of providing the ammunition for a lone striker who could fit perfectly into Andre Villas-Boas’ 4-3-3 formation.

A lack of Champions League football could count heavily against Spurs though, with Italian giants Juventus also linked with a move for the prolific striker.

Napoli could also have a substantial war chest to play with should Edinson Cavani leave for the riches of either Chelsea or Manchester City.

Then again, the latter of those two English sides are also apparently lined-up for talks with Gomez, at least according to his agent Uli Ferber.

For the time being Tottenham would appear to be the most leftfield option for the powerful frontman.

But should they manage to engineer a surprise deal for Gomez then expect their odds of 5/4 to finish in the top four to tumble.
