14:30 Royal Ascot: Fahey to milk Jersey Stakes with Garswood

Published:

In a 20-year training career, Richard Fahey has just three Royal Ascot winners to his name, a very modest record for a trainer of his stature. But in Garswood, he has the perfect opportunity to make it four in the Jersey Stakes.

Last seen at Newmarket, the Dutch Art colt produced a respectable display, finishing seventh when upped in class and distance in the 2000 Guineas. A stumble leaving the stalls certainly did not help his chances, but in truth the three year-old is probably not Group 1 standard.

Go back to April, however, and a blistering performance in the Free Handicap over 7f gives Fahey’s runner a great chance of success at the Berkshire track.

The Malton handler has described Garswood as a “big raw horse” and has suggested that “he’s been getting stronger everyday since” his Guineas disappointment, and looks worth taking a chance on at 11/2.

For those seeking some each-way value, Richard Hannon’s Ninjago could well run into a place. Although not the choice of stable jockey Richard Hughes, the full brother to Group 3-winning filly Purr Along has course form already in the book.

Jimmy Fortune’s mount is available to back at 25/1, but that shouldn’t put punters off, considering three of the last four winners have been priced at 10/1 or bigger. A comfortable victor over 6f at Ascot in May, it looks improbable that an extra 220 yards will prove too much to ask.

The Jersey Stakes always develops into a highly competitive affair, but at the prices, Garswood and Ninjago look worth keeping on-side.
