West Brom v Wigan: Baggies can end Latics’ hopes of great escape

Published:

Wigan find themselves in the all too familiar position of needing some big results in the closing weeks of the season to avoid relegation – but their last-ditch assault on survival looks like getting off to the worst possible start.

The Latics – who are currently five points behind Newcastle United in the safety of 17th – and are priced at 21/10 to get three points this Saturday.

However, while the Latics’ traditional end of season climb out of the danger zone could lead punters to back the north west side, a smarter bet is to back the Baggies at a pretty decent 5/4.

Steve Clarke’s men have enjoyed a good run of form in recent matches and saw off the increasingly impressive Southampton 3-0 last week.

West Brom have the seventh best home record in the Premier League and have picked up a shed load of points in home clashes against sides currently in the bottom half of the table.

They have only lost two home games against teams below them in the table (defeats to Stoke and Fulham) and saw off Wigan 2-1 earlier in the season.

The Baggies shouldn’t have things all their own way though.

Despite picking up results at home, they have struggled to shut out the opposition completely and have conceded at least one goal in each of their last nine matches at the Hawthorns.

With Wigan averaging exactly a goal a game away from home in the league this season, backing both teams to find the net and West Brom to win looks pretty tasty at 31/10.

Finally, considering three of their last four encounters has seen at least three goals scored, over 2.5 goals looks a tidy punt at 4/5.
