This summer’s five biggest potential Premier League transfers

With the season over attention turns to the madness that is the summer transfer window. There has already been masses of movement on the managerial front with the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, the accession of David Moyes, the departure of Roberto Mancini and the ever looming ghost of Jose Mourinho once again hanging over Stamford Bridge.

There’s already been talks of deals being agreed and the world’s elite and their agents being spotted at airports throughout Europe but we have syphoned through the fiction and emerged with the fact, bringing you the five deals that are set to rule your summer.

Edinson Cavani

The Napoli hitman has enjoyed yet another fruitful season in Serie A, smashing a chart-topping 29 goals, six more than closest rival Antonio Di Natale. The 26-year-old Uruguayan is one of the world’s hottest properties and a price tag of around £50 million has done little to deter the big spending of Manchester City and Chelsea. The north-west club have already been in contact about a player plus cash deal involving Edin Dzeko, and Cavani is rumoured to be high on incoming Pensioners boss Jose Mourinho’s wishlist.

Stevan Jovetic

The Fiorentina schemer has long been linked with a move to Arsenal and rumours abound that his switch to The Emirates is set to be confirmed in the next few days. Despite not operating as an out-and-out striker the Montenegrin notched 13 goals in 30 appearances in Italy’s top division this term. Operating as a trequartista he could be the missing link in Arsene Wenger’s Gunners side, as the north-London club are allegedly set to splash the cash.

Falcao

Falcao has been the leading light in an impressive season for Atletico Madrid and his blistering goalscoring ratio has made him Europe’s most wanted this summer. The Colombian has netted 28 times in La Liga this season, giving him an average of 0.875 goals per game in the Spanish top-flight. The ex-Porto man has been linked with a whole host of clubs, most recently affluent French outfit Monaco. Again it seems Chelsea and Man City will lead the Premier League charge and it would represent a major coup for English football should Falcao opt for a move to these shores.

Wayne Rooney

Since making it clear to Sir Alex Ferguson that he wanted to leave Old Trafford Wayne Rooney has been given the cold shoulder at Manchester United. The incoming David Moyes may be able to persuade the England international to stay put but he seems intent on a new challenge. The Red Devils are not keen to sell one of their star men to a rival, but with the player likely to want to remain in England the champions may be forced to do business with Chelsea. Jose Mourinho has long been an admirer of Rooney, and a fresh opportunity to re-find his once world class form close to home could tempt the Liverpudlian to sign on at Stamford Bridge.

Cristiano Ronaldo

The Portuguese has made no secret of his discontent at playing second fiddle to Lionel Messi in Spain and a move back to the Premier League would seem a viable option were he to exit Madrid. Ronaldo’s father figure no longer remains at the helm at Old Trafford but a move back to the club where he became one of the world’s best is sure to appeal to the 28-year-old. Jose Mourinho will be hoping he too can lure the 34-goal man to west London when he takes over at Chelsea. The Special One will be armed with a bottomless war chest in order to bring Roman Abramovich the title and the signing of Ronaldo would be a massive fillip for the club.
