Laois v Antrim – Leinster Senior Hurling Championship
While things are looking up for Laois, following promotion from Division 2A, an over reliance on Willie Hyland could prove their downfall against an improved Antrim side.
Stephen Maher and Tommy Fitzgerald have helped to share the scoring load this year but Antrim will take confidence from their performances in Division 1B this year and having already gained Championship match experience after beating Westmeath 3-18 to 2-13.
Star performer Neil McManus could once again prove the difference here, while St Galls’ Jackson McGreevey has been their find of the season in the half back line.
Westmeath v Carlow – Leinster Senior Football Championship
A bad run in Division 4 is hardly inspiring preparation for Carlow’s clash with Westmeath, especially given that the hosts have had an excellent year so far.
Unlucky to lose out to Derry in the Division 2 league final, Westmeath will turn to key players Kieran Gavin and Dessie Dolan – who both return to the starting XV – to ensure success against a side that lost their last five league games in a row.
Cavan v Armagh – Ulster Football Championship
Cavan Football is riding high on confidence at present following their recent Ulster Under 21 successes.
However an injury to star midfielder Gearoid McKiernan, and their inconsistent performances in Division 3, will boost the chances of a youthful Armagh team.
Under Paul Grimley, the new-look Armagh side have attempted valiantly to inject a new style to their play and while injuries mean Charlie Vernon and Kieran Toner will both be sidelined for this fixture, Crossmaglen’s Jamie Clarke has the ability to carry the side to glory.
Galway v Mayo – Connacht Football Championship
Galway will be without their captain Finian Hanley and, while a return to fitness for Michael Meehan and the form of young midfielder Fiontan O Curraoin will count as positives, Mayo could prove too stern a test for the hosts.
