Refreshed Wolves can live up to League One favourites’ tag

Successive relegations have ensured that the mood around Molineux at the moment is a lot darker than Wolverhampton Wanderers’ famous gold shirts, but there can be a light at the end of the tunnel for next season’s League One favourites.  

With fans so visibly upset following the 2-1 home loss to Burnley at the end of April which all but secured relegation to the third tier – a fate sealed with a loss at Brighton on the final day of the regular season – there will need to be some serious fence-mending over the summer for the club to win back their supporters.

That could come in the form of the appointment of the former Millwall manager Kenny Jackett, who is reportedly the first in line for an interview to replace the sacked Dean Saunders.

Both Saunders and previous boss Stale Solbakken oversaw disastrous spells in charge which contributed to Wolves’ demise, but their removal and the appointment of a manager such as Jackett – who led Millwall to promotion from the third tier via the play-offs in 2010 – would restore some hope.

Wolves are currently priced at 4/1 to leap back into the Championship by winning League One next season, whilst they are evens to secure promotion via any method.

Fans of The Old Gold can take hope from recent examples of clubs immediately leaping back into the second tier following relegation.

Saunders’ former employers Doncaster achieved the feat this season, whilst Peterborough did likewise in 2010/11 and both Leicester and Scunthorpe climbed back together in the 2008/09 season.

The Posh are 3/1 to make the same ascent this time around, whilst this season’s Championship doormats Bristol City are 5/2.

Neither of them have the same backing and status as Wolves though, and if the Midlanders can get their managerial appointment right then they look well-placed to make an immediate return to the Championship.
