Players Championship win for Woods means money back on rest

Tiger Woods may not have played in a tournament since finishing in a share of fourth at the Masters, but he is still the man to beat as the 7/1 favourite to win the Players Championship.

Woods’ record in the Players Championship in the last decade is not the best, as he only has one top-10 finish since when ninth in 2009.

However, if his three PGA Tour victories this season are not enough of a reason to side with Woods at TPC Sawgrass, then his strong statistics on Par 5s should provide a final incentive.

Which player best takes advantage of the Par 5s is liable to be a key determinant on the final leaderboard, especially as there are four present at the course.

This bodes well for Woods as he heads the PGA Tour statistics in Par-5 scoring, alongside in areas including strokes gained through putting and adjusted scoring.

The obvious area of improvement will be for Woods to regularly find the fairway from the tee and it would be foolish to not expect him to have worked heavily on this during his recent absence from tournament play.

Accuracy over distance is certainly needed at TPC Sawgrass, while more than many tournaments on the PGA Tour schedule, experience of the surroundings tends to be a major advantage here.

Woods has the experience, but if his driving accuracy does suffer again, he may do well to better his finish of a share of 40th from 12 months ago.
