Man United v Chelsea: back Blues to see off lethargic hosts

Published:

Chelsea’s season has taken a turn for the better in recent weeks but a Europa League victory would be scant consolation for failure to qualify for the Champions League.

So much of their summer planning depends on making it back amongst the European big boys and a win against Manchester United would be a huge step in achieving that goal.

The Blues are currently priced at 12/5 to come away from Old Trafford with all three points and, with United having nothing to play for and Chelsea everything, it looks a punt well worth taking on.

United were sloppy and seemed pretty disinterested during the first 45 minutes of their match against Arsenal last weekend and it’s hard to seem them rousing themselves for this match – regardless of the rhetoric coming out of Salford.

For their part, Chelsea have been flying in recent weeks and have now gone five games without defeat, a run that’s included four wins and a 2-2 draw at Anfield.

They also have a pretty decent recent record against United and have got something out of each of their last three encounters, with Chelsea winning their FA Cup quarter-final clash at Stamford Bridge 1-0 last month.

Meanwhile, United haven’t exactly smashed over the Premier League finish line, with that draw against the Gunners and a leveler at West Ham last month being amongst their last three results.

However, they can be relied upon to score at Old Trafford.

You have to go back to their 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa in December 2009 to find the last time they failed to find the net at home in the Premier League, which makes a punt on over 2.5 goals and Chelsea to win look pretty tasty at 4/1.
