Ladbrokes’ alternative to the PFA’s League One team of the year

The PFA has announced it’s League One team of the year.

League One has arguably provided more drama and excitement than any other tier of English football this season with several twists and turns through out the year. It could have quite easily been completely different for the group of players who made it out of the division and with that in mind here is an alternative to the PFA’s Team of the Year.

Marek Štěch

The Yeovil keeper has proven a revelation since signing on a permanent basis from West Ham. Still only 23, Štěch has been imperious between the sticks this year, helping the Glovers secure a spot in the play-off final. He has been lauded this season for his excellent reactions and shot-stopping abilities.

Tony McMahon

The ex-Middlesbrough man is now perceived to be one of the bargains of the season after signing on a free transfer for Sheffield United and has been a staple of the Blades defence ever since. Solid defensively, McMahon’s set pieces have also been excellent as exemplified by his two 30 yard screamers against Crawley.

Tommy Elphick

One of Bournemouth’s most impressive players this year after the south-coast club picked him up following his release from Brighton. A domineering centre-half, he immediately won the respect of team-mates and fans alike, gained the captaincy and helped to inspire Bournemouth to the Championship.

Jamie McCombe

The Rovers centre-half, in tears, running to celebrate with James Coppinger after bagging the winner and securing the title against Brentford will be one of the defining images of the season. McCombe gave away the penalty that led to that break for Rovers, and had Brentford stuck it away, it would have been unfair on the ex-Huddersfield man who has been so solid for Doncaster this year.

Dean Lewington

The Dons’ iconic captain made his 400th appearance for the club this term, and it was fitting that he had one of his best seasons to date. He was a mainstay on the left-hand side all season, getting up and down the line and was a nightmare for many a right-mid.

Carl Baker

Coventry’s club captain and player of the year, Baker was prolific this season, netting 15 goals from midfield for the Sky Blues, including a pile-driving last-minute equaliser against Colchester that anyone could be proud of.

Ed Upson

The tidy midfielder has kept things ticking over in the centre of the park for Yeovil all season and has been key in helping them secure their highest ever league finish. The 23-year-old will forever be held in high regard by Glovers fans after scoring the goal that sent them to Wembley.

Harry Arter

When Eddie Howe returned to Bournemouth in October 2012, he gave Harry Arter the central midfield role and the goal-scoring midfielder more than repaid his faith in him. Scoring eight goals from that point onwards, the dynamic midfielder pulled the strings all season and bagged the crucial winner against Carlisle which sent the Cherries up.

Ryan Lowe

After being released by Sheffield Wednesday, Dons’ boss Karl Robinson offered Lowe another shot at League One. He started slowly scoring only once in his first 18 games, but finished the season as joint top goal scorer on with 12 strikes as MK Dons just missed out on the play offs.

Clayton Donaldson

The powerhouse centre forward was been at the forefront of Brentford’s battle for promotion. Athletic and deadly in front of goal, he has scored 20 goals this season, including two in the play-off semi final against Swindon.

Brett Pitman

Pitman was reunited with Cherries manager Howe, after a short but successful spell with Bristol City and while Howe was banking on the 25-year-old to kick-start the Cherries season even he could not have expected such an input. Firing 16 goals in 20 league games, including nine in the last nine matches of the season, Pitman led from the front to take the seasiders from the bottom half of the table to promotion ecstasy.
