Fergie’s time: How many managers has Sir Alex outlasted? [Infographic]
After more than 26 years in charge, Sir Alex Ferguson has decided that now is the right time to end his successful time as Manchester United manager. So, so much has changed in that time.
Fergie has won 38 trophies in his time at Old Trafford, outperforming other great bosses including Ottmar Hitzfeld, Fabio Capello and Arsene Wenger.
Since he was appointed, rivals at home and in Europe have come and gone. Battles with Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and some of the giants of European football in the Champions League have provided unbeatable entertainment down the years.
He’s also helped to develop some hugely promising young talent. In his time with United, he blooded a crop of youth players and turned them into global superstars who, in turn, have delivered an astonishing amount of silverware.
David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville all came through United’s famous youth academy, while modern-day stars like Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck have both made telling contributions to their recent successes.
Fergie also had a great record in the transfer market. The likes of Peter Schmiechel, Roy Keane, Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Robin van Persie have become legends or are legends in the making at the club.
Despite a rocky start, Fergie has led United to become the most successful club of the past two decades in England.
