Everton fan favourites desperate to succeed United-bound Moyes
Published:As Everton’s search for David Moyes’ successor continues, it may prove prudent to side with options close to home, with two ex-Toffees players in particular looking to cut their management teeth at the helm of the Merseyside outfit.
Namely, 16/1 shot David Weir, and 20/1 chance Phil Neville, who would both relish the opportunity to build upon Moyes’ healthy Goodison Park legacy.
It is thought that Neville, whose contract as a member of Everton’s playing staff expires this summer, has already been interviewed for the post, and impressed club officials by outlining his desire to maintain stability at the club.
A former captain, the respect Neville commands amongst the playing squad is also a plus point to his chances, though it is other former Toffees skipper Weir who would seem to have the most serious chances of landing the post.
Whilst the ex-Rangers man has yet to manage a first-team outfit, his tenure in charge of Everton reserves has yielded impressive results, earning him much praise amongst the Goodison hierarchy.
And as a modern-day legend on Merseyside, the many allies the 43-year-old has at boardroom level within the club only improve his chances of landing the role.
Roberto Martinez remains 2/1 favourite for the position, with the Spaniard set to announce a decision regarding his Wigan future following upcoming talks with Latics chairman Dave Whelan.
Prior to Martinez’ declaration though, the opportunity to snap up lengthy odds on other potential suitors to the post is prevalent, and punters could reap hefty rewards by capitalising.
8/1 Malky Mackay is another candidate that Toffees chairman Bill Kenwright reportedly likes the look of, but whether he would swap newly-promoted Cardiff for Everton is uncertain.
What does appear certain though, is that vast fluctuation will occur within this market until an announcement is made, and so now looks the best time to get on longer-priced options to fill the void left by Moyes.
