England v Ireland: Rooney to extend scoring streak in home win

Published:

England and Ireland renew their rivalry at Wembley on Wednesday in what will be their first clash since that ill-fated meeting in 1995.

Wayne Rooney has been lethal for Roy Hodgson’s charges since the European Championships, netting in his last five internationals, with his country undefeated in each of those ties.

A win for the hosts with the Manchester United striker notching at any time looks the pick of the wincast market and is available at 11/10.

The home side understandably head into the clash as the 4/9 favourites against a nation that sit a full 32 places below them in the FIFA rankings, and which did little to suggest a potential upset here in recent draws with Sweden and Austria.

England have been formidable on their own patch, losing just one of 13 under the famous arch.

Frank Lampard still remains a key figure in this squad and has proved himself at international level, just as he has at club level, by netting in his last two appearances for England, and he looks a shrewd pick to find the target at anytime at 15/8.

The draw can be backed at 10/3 and it may be here that the true value lies for the punter in search of an upset. The previous three completed clashes between the pair have resulted in a share of the spoils, and the Green Army’s preceding two visits to teams ranked higher than they have resulted in draws.

The Irish come in to this one as the 6/1 outsiders but they haven’t lost on their travels in their four matches this term.
