Brentford v Yeovil: Stuttering Bees in for Wembley sting
The Bees didn’t let their final-day disaster against Doncaster hinder their progress to the play-off final, but plucky Yeovil will prove a far bigger test of their resolve.
At 11/5, the Glovers look excellent value to win this all or nothing tie and claim a place in the Championship for next season. They’ve beaten Brentford home and away this term, scoring six and conceding just once, which will have them brimming with confidence after overturning Sheffield United’s one-goal deficit to win their semi final tie to book their final berth.
Uwe Rosler has proven himself quite the capable rudderman this term but, in truth, his team rather stumbled towards toward League One finish line, winning two of their closing seven games. They haven’t been able to uncover a winning formula in the play-offs either, relying on the lottery of penalties to ensure Swindon spent another season in the third tier.
They may have held their nerve in the shootout, but a price of 5/4 is too short to be backing the beleaguered Bees to triumph at Wembley.
If they are to prevail, one player they will have to stop is Yeovil midfielder Kevin Dawson.
He opened the scoring in his side’s 2-0 win over Sheffield United last time out and has bagged half of the club’s last four goals. At 16/1, he could prove a shrewd punt in the first goalscorer stakes, while 5/1 for the in-form Irishman to notch at any point is a tempting prospect.
However, the most enticing bet on offer has to be the 9/2-rated Yeovil win to nil.
Brentford have mustered only a solitary clean sheet in their previous 10 league jaunts from Griffin Park and, while they’ve failed to find the back of the net in less than half of these, the Glover’s defence is equipped with the know-how to keep the west Londoners attack at bay which points to a big pay day.
