The 2012-13 Premier League season was entertaining, even if the final round of fixtures lacked the last-day drama of 12 months ago.
A rock-steady Manchester United won Sir Alex Ferguson a 13th Premier League title, while Wigan’s eight-year stay in the top flight came to an end.
A number of newcomers to English football impressed. The most notable were Aston Villa’s Belgium striker Christian Benteke, Swansea’s £2.2m bargain buy Michu and young centre-back Matija Nastasic, who formed a formidable defensive partnership with Vincent Kompany at Manchester City.
Some experienced heads caught the eye as well. Frank Lampard, for example, got yet another double-figure goal haul to become Chelsea’s all-time top scorer, while the likes of Paul Scholes, Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen called time on their careers.
Statistically speaking, the 2012-13 season was fascinating for so many reasons. Incidents such as the Luis Suarez ‘bite’ and Ferguson’s retirement dominated social media, while the managerial merry-go-round continued to spin.
Some things didn’t change, however. Following his summer move to United, Robin van Persie was in the goals, finishing as the Premier League’s top scorer.
Despite his impressive debut season at Old Trafford, in terms of performance, the Dutchman was overshadowed by Gareth Bale. The Tottenham talisman had his best season ever, scoring 21 Premier League goals and setting up countless others.
On average, roughly 2.8 goals were scored per game, and when you take into account that a number of teams were a little shot-shy, that’s pretty impressive.
