Rodgers looking to PSG to answer Liverpool’s need for goals

Alex McCarthy may have had the game of his life in ensuring Reading secured a 0-0 draw with Liverpool, but recent results do indicate that Brendan Rodgers may need another striker to add to his ranks.

Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge have not managed a goal between them in Liverpool’s last four games and the team have now drawn blanks in successive fixtures for the first time since September 2011.

Alongside a new central defender, another striker could well arrive at Anfield this summer and reports from France suggest that Kevin Gameiro is prominent on the club’s shortlist.

Gameiro has found first-team starts hard to come by this season at PSG since the arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but is still Carlo Ancelotti’s second top scorer despite only making six starts.

Meanwhile, he still only made the substitute’s bench in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 encounter with Valencia, even though Ibrahimovic was banned and fellow forward Jeremy Menez was also unavailable.

Gameiro has certainly struggled to fit in at the French champions elect this season, with game minutes down to a minimum and those that he does get often being out of his most natural position.

Therefore, with PSG potentially planning for another summer of big spending, the club are likely to find it difficult to prevent Gameiro leaving, even it would be wrong to describe him as being surplus to requirements.

Whether he would be afforded more regular starting time at Liverpool though does not have an obvious answer.

Suarez looks good when utilised in a support striker position, linking play and creating chances and even though he currently tops the Premier League top-scorer list this season, he can still be wasteful.

Sturridge started promisingly, but he is caught in a bit of a barren spell and Liverpool’s lack of goals of late may have cost them a top-six finish this season, for which they have now drifted to 3/1.
