Real Madrid plan Tottenham raid for Bale and Villas-Boas

Real Madrid are lining up a massive summer bid for Tottenham Hotspur’s Gareth Bale and Andre Villas-Boas – if the latest rumours are to be believed.

According to the Sunday Mirror, the reigning La Liga champions are set to offer Spurs around £40 million for Bale and, if Jose Mourinho’s much-rumoured departure goes ahead, £10 million for manager Villas-Boas.

A move for Bale from either Real or Barcelona would hardly be a surprise, with both clubs long thought to be keen on adding the brilliant Welshman to their ranks.

However, a plot to bag Villas-Boas is a new one and, while it’s hard to see it happening (the Sunday Mirror reckons that Carlo Ancelotti is Real’s first choice), it’s far from impossible.

The lure of Champions League football is Tottenham’s best hope of hanging on to both of their big names but, after a poor couple of weeks, that’s looking less likely than for a long time.

They are currently fifth in the Premier League, behind Chelsea who have played a game less and have a far superior goal difference.

The north London side have now slipped to 5/2 to make the Champions League places after winning just one of their last four Premier League matches.

Arsenal have climbed to third in the Premier League after their late win against Norwich and are now as short as 9/2 to be playing Champions League football for the umpteenth straight year.

It would be a huge blow for Spurs if they were to miss out on qualifying for Europe’s elite competition and could be hugely detrimental to their long-term ambitions if Bale or Villas-Boas decides to take their talents to Spain.

It’s well and truly squeaky bum time is north London…
