Pricewise puts up Quiscover Fontaine as his National longshot

Running alongside eventual winner Neptune Collonges on the first circuit last year, Quiscover Fontane was travelling as well as anything until falling at the 17th fence.

However, his performance until this point was clearly held in high regard by Pricewise, with Tom Segal putting Quiscover Fontaine up as one of his Grand National tips at 50/1.

He must certainly be considered a speculative selection as he has mostly been campaigned in his career over the minimum trip of 2m and has no winning form over a distance greater than 2m3f.

Therefore, it is slightly surprising that connections have switched the horse from sprint distances to marathon trips.

But it is worth noting that he ran a fine race in fourth two years ago in the Irish Grand National, where he was coaxed into the race from off the pace and ran on in the final stages.

Quiscover Fontaine has clearly been campaigned with the Grand National in mind this year and it will be hoped that two average performances in Ireland in February would have helped put him spot on for Aintree, although connections would certainly have liked his rating to have been dropped slightly as a result, which it hasn’t.

Aside from his lack of winning form over longer trips, the other concern is that the nine-year-old is quite a small horse, which has to be considered a negative in a race considered to be the ultimate jumping test.

Meanwhile, he has no winning chase form at anything greater than a moderate level and 14 of the last 15 National winners arrived at Aintree with a victory at a grade no lower than Class 2 level.
