Hard to oppose Aidan O’Brien in 2013 Classics

Published:

Last year Aidan O’Brien bagged four of the five Classics and with an array of exciting prospects, it would not be out of the question for the multiple champion trainer to have another successful year.

Ladbrokes are offering 50/1 that the Ballydoyle man trains the winner of all five Classics this year, but with the excellent Camelot embarking on his four-year-old season, he will need a new prospect to step up.

Whether Aidan O’Brien has another charge quite as exceptional is up for debate, but Kingsbarns looks to be a fantastic prospect. After an exciting season last year, it would not be out of the question for him to follow in Camelot’s footsteps.

The colt was an obliging favourite on both of his starts last year and his victory in the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy, which Camelot had won the previous year, was a brilliant performance on only his second start.

However, there are doubts over fitness. An infection developed after losing a shoe in training which meant that he missed out on a racecourse gallop at the Curragh. Although because of that there is definitely value to be had at 12/1 for the 2000 Guineas considering he is likely to be in the frame if he does run.

If Kingsbarns falls short, Cristoforo Colombo also looks to have a great chance, although he has not won since his first start. However, stepping up to a mile should suit and he is 7/1 for the 2000 Guineas.

In fact, O’Brien could bag both of Newmarket’s showpieces, as he did last year when Homecoming Queen got up at 25/1 in the 1000 Guineas. It is 20/1 that that success is repeated and O’Brien trains both the 1000 and 2000 Guineas.

If that is to be the case, O’Brien may have to cause an upset once more with 25/1 shot Magical Dream. However, it would not be out of the question for the progressive filly, who landed a Group 2 last year, although she does re-oppose rivals who have beaten her before, including Sky Lantern who is a 10/1 shot.
