Ferrari and Lotus the best bets to score big in Bahrain
Red Bull lead both Formula One championships after three races, and ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix this weekend, are 7/4 to be the highest scoring team.
But given Mark Webber’s endless problems in China last time out, and his poor record around the Sakhir circuit, it’s far from likely that both Red Bull cars will finish high up the order.
Webber’s best finish here is his fourth place from 2012, the first time the Aussie has taken the chequered flag in a top-five position in Bahrain, while Sebastian Vettel has only won once at the track.
Ferrari however, boast Bahrain specialists in Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, with five wins between them. At the same price as Red Bull at 7/4, the Italian drivers are well-worth backing to be the highest scoring team this weekend.
Alonso’s commanding win in China last weekend only reasserts this view, while Massa is continuing to show his championship-fighting form of old and counts the 3.4-mile circuit among his favourites.
The soaring temperatures of Bahrain often cause more retirements than usual, but the Ferrari’s bulletproof reliability should only add confidence to those who back the scarlet cars.
Last year’s event in Bahrain featured a race-long challenge for victory from both Lotus drivers. The car excelled at maintaining its tires whilst running a quick pace and Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean finished second and third respectively.
This year’s car is similarly supple on the latest range of Pirelli rubber, and while others may struggle in the heat, the Enstone squad should feature once again for victory and are 3/1 to be the highest scoring team this weekend.
The outside bet is Mercedes at 7/1.
Lewis Hamilton took pole in China and Nico Rosberg felt he had the quickest car on the grid before a suspension issue sideline his efforts. The team are moving forward at a vast rate and should be in the mix once again on Sunday.
