Canas could provide an alternative to Britton at Swansea

The one position that many would consider that Swansea do not need to strengthen is in the centre of midfield, with Leon Britton, Jonathan De Guzman, Ki Sung-yong and Kemy Agustien all battling for two spots.

However, since Joe Allen’s departure to Liverpool, a player with more defensive tendencies could be a help, especially to provide some muscle alongside Britton, whose main attribute is not winning back possession despite his deep position.

Jose Canas has long been earmarked as a possible candidate for this role and the speculation has not disappeared that he will arrive at the Liberty Stadium in the summer.

Canas was initially linked in January, but Real Betis opted to rebuff an approach from Swansea, thought to be in the region of £750,000, despite the midfielder’s contract being up at the end of the season.

So, Michael Laudrup is now expected to move in to sign the 25-year-old for free in the hope of adding to the growing Spanish contingent at Swansea.

Canas is not so much a tough-tackling enforcer-type midfielder, but is not afraid to get a foot in and perhaps more importantly for Swansea, seems as though he will fit in with their ball-retention style.

The one potential hiccup for any deal could come from Southampton, with Manuel Pochettino also well aware of Canas’ assets and potential to bolster his own midfield options, which are slightly limited at present.

But, the offer of Europa League football should ensure Swansea remain in the driving seat and some reports suggest that a pre-contract agreement has already been reached with Betis.

Whatever happens in the Premier League run-in, this season has already gone down as a success for Swansea, but a top-half finish, which can be backed at 4/9, would add a little bit of icing to their cake.
