Arsenal target Serie A striker as first summer recruit
Arsene Wenger this week spoke of his ‘fear’ regarding Chelsea’s summer spending power. As a means of combating it, he appears to have started his transfer activity early.
Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic is his number one target and it is believed that the Gunners have opened talks with the Italians with regards to snaring the Montenegrin.
After eight trophy-less seasons, Wenger is finely prepared to spend a wad in order to better equip his side to compete with the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea and he has what is thought to be a £70m war chest at his disposal this summer.
A large percentage of that – £25m apparently – will be splashed out to acquire Jovetic, who has scored 12 goals in 30 appearances while operating a lone striker role for the Serie A side this season.
While this isn’t the most prolific of hauls, deploying the 23-year-old just off Olivier Giroud, whose impressive debut season in the Premier League stands in him in excellent stead for next term, should reap some serious rewards.
Playing as solitary striker, Jovetic has a lot more target man-like responsibilities, holding the ball up, running the channels etc, which aren’t the strongest facets of his game. Should he sign for Arsenal, he’d have Giroud carrying out those duties, while he was operated in the pockets of space the Frenchman creates, utilising his flair and creativity.
It’s a signing the Gunners need to make, finding themselves emphatically off the pace in the title race and scrabbling around for a Champions League spot that they could easily miss out on. They’re still seeking a source of goals adequate enough to replace those which Robin van Persie put away before departing and the pairing of Jovetic and Giroud could go a long way to filling his shoes.
As it stands, Arsenal are 19/10 second favourites to top the Premier League without the inclusion of the Manchester giants, though they will be hoping to draw much closer to the north west pairing next season.
