Alonso and a couple of Swans on Liverpool’s transfer radar
Liverpool are poised to bring in a raft of new players this summer, with Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso top of their list.
Alonso – who played for the Reds between 2004 and 2009 – is apparently stalling on signing a new deal with the Spanish champions and, according to the Sunday Mirror, that means Liverpool are set to step in.
The red top reckons that the Anfield side are prepared to splash out £8.5million on the Spanish international but, with owner John Henry determined to cut costs, that seems rather on the steep side for a 31-year-old central midfielder.
Meanwhile, the Sunday Telegraph fancies Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers to return to his former club Swansea with a meaty cheque book in hand.
They believe that Rodgers is eyeing a move for Swans goalkeeper Michel Vorm and defender Ashley Williams who have both impressed for the Welsh side in their two Premier League campaigns so far.
However, the Swans will want a decent profit on the £1.5million they spent on Vorm nearly two years ago and the broadsheet reckons that Arsenal are the side far more likely to make a serious bid for Williams – despite the Reds needing a replacement for the retiring Jamie Carragher.
Finally, one player who looks set to stay where he is, is Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.
Rodgers is hoping to tie the England captain down to a two-year extension as soon as possible and has described the midfielder as a “remarkable professional”
