Tranmere v Stevenage: Prenton Park goals at a premium

Published:

In a Super Sunday with a twist, two sides who have endured far from desirable 2013’s go head-to-head at Prenton Park.

Tranmere Rovers were one of League One’s dominant forces pre-Christmas and, while they remain firmly in the promotion mix, they’re giving off the impression of a team travelling in the wrong direction. Managerless Stevenage, on the other hand, are having a horrendous time of things since the turn of the year. They too were in amongst the pace-setters early doors, but have lost every game they’ve played bar four since December 15th.
This shocking spell of form resulted in Gary Smith’s axing and they head to Merseyside on the back of six straight away-day losses, the last three of which saw them fail to find the back of the net.

Tranmere, who have been beaten in seven in their previous 10, must take advantage of Stevenage’s diabolical form if they’re to maintain their promotion aspirations going into the season’s business end. They’ve failed to win four of their previous five at home so confidence will be far from high but, at 1/1, they look decent value for the win.

Stevenage sans mojo are 3/1 to win the game, but this should be far longer in truth, though the draw tempts at 9/4.

Fans of the unders should be poised to capitalise in this one. Six of Rovers’ previous seven home games have fallen shy of the 2.5-goal mark, as have four of the visitor’s previous five on the road and their goalscoring difficulties always makes them a good bet in this market. For fewer than 2.5 goals to be scored in this clash, a price of 4/6 is on offer and it looks the safest bet of the lot here.
