Dortmund star may benefit from Man United transfer merry-go-round

Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski has long been admired by Sir Alex Ferguson, who bid £17m for the striker before securing the signature of Robin Van Persie last summer.

And with Lewandowski himself desperate to make the move to Old Trafford, he could finally get his wish this coming close-season.

The Polish international, 24, is believed to be closely monitoring Wayne Rooney’s situation at Manchester United, as rumours continue to persist regarding the England forward’s future.

And should Ferguson oversee Rooney’s departure this year, Lewandowski would prioritise a move to the Red Devils over any other.

Although Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich currently lead the chase for the Dortmund attacker, there are a number of clubs in the hunt for Lewandowski’s services.

And Bayern’s reported interest in PSG ace Zlatan Ibrahimovic could spark a series of events that Lewandowski can prove the ultimate beneficiary of, in terms of sealing his dream move.

Indeed, it is thought that the Parisiens will step up their pursuit of Rooney if Ibrahimovic does link up with Pep Guardiola again next term, by making a colossal bid for the ex-Everton man.

Ferguson could cash in, knowing that as Rooney has only two years remaining on his current contract, this may prove his final chance to gain a substantial fee for the 27-year-old.

If he does allow Rooney to go therefore, Ferguson could very well return to test Dortmund’s resolve for Lewandowski, whom he has continued to watch closely this season.

A fee of around £15m would be acceptable to the German champions, who are fearful of losing one of their prize assets for nothing, given that his contract expires in summer 2014.

And Lewandowski could therefore gain the opportunity to swap the Westfalenstadion for Old Trafford sooner rather than later, with the Pole certain to relish the chance to become a United player.
